Phenylalanine is an indispensible (essential amino acid) present in many common proteins, especially haemoglobin.

Functions:
Phenylalanine is an amino acid and therefore required for the synthesis of protein in the body and therefore essential for health and growth.

Phenylalanine also is considered important for mood and cognitive function due to its role in the biosynthesis or neurotransmitters dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine.
